Ballsy ‘Nation’ interns write LTE about their own pay
Good on them. I hope they get what they need.
Update: Emily Douglas, Nation editor extraordinaire, pointed out to me on Twitter that the Nation Institute replied, which I did not include. Their reply is below:
Update (6:00 p.m.): The Nation Institute tweeted that they will be paying Nation Institute and Nation interns minimum wage this fall.

WOO HOO!
MINIMUM WAGE!
They are SOOOOO lucky.
Not as lucky as a starting line cook at In&Out Burger ($9.50/hr), though.
Seriously: FUCK YOU, NATION.

How does “unwaged intern labor” discriminate against “people of color” specifically? I guess because they’re statistically more likely to be of the lower classes. Why then are they differentiated from the “working class”? I guess that’s the new sobriquet for “broke-ass white people.”

The letter states the reason. Because the only people who can accept an unpaid or low paid internship are from the middle or upper class. Without parents who can support them while they do these internships, lower class students are less likely to apply. If these internships were able to provide more wages there’d probably be more lower class applicants.
